Like you, I tend to be very rough on just about everything. I am an ardnet adherent of, and extremely thankful for, Casio's GzOne line of phones, my current being the amazing, virtually indestructible Commando.As far as watches are concerned, I always focused on durability as one of my main criteria. As such, I've owned quite a few Rolex watches. My daily-wear watch has been a Rolex Datejust for about fifteen of the past twenty-five years. The interesting thing about Rolex is that, while the brand is known as one of the ultimate luxury brands, what the watches are primarily known for by folks who aren't interested in status symbols is their rugged durability. In extreme and hostile environments know other watch can stand up to a Rolex. I was climbing in Alaska about ten years ago when my Nikon SLR froze to the point of not working but my Datejust never missed a beat. Oh, and the feature I love most about the Reverso is that it was designed for polo players so the dial flips around exposing the back of the watch to the elements, protecting the dial and face from being damaged. But you are correct, venturing into the mid to high end watches can be a daunting task. The heart of the watch, and the key to it appreciating in value is the movement, and the vast majority of Swiss watches use movements made by a company called ETA. What most people don't realize is that you can spend upwards of 5,000 dollars on a Cartier watch that uses the same ETA movement as a lesser known brand like Glycine uses in one of their 500 dollar automatic watches.If you ever become interested in a very high quality but reasonably priced automatic watch I would recommend something by Glycine like the Combat model which you can find on ebay for less than 400 dollars if you shop around. Sorry to dump so much unsolicited information on you, but you have to understand, It's quite the rare occasion when I can talk watches with someone who will even pretend to listen.
